The chairmanship of the African Union has passed to Mauritania, Comoros' President Azali Assoumani, the previous chairman of the union, said at the 37th AU summit in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
"We would like to wish full success to my brother [Mauritania's President] Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, who will take over the noble mission that we entrusted to him in the service of our continent," Assoumani noted.
Mauritania initially refused to take the chair of the union, as the country is due to hold presidential elections in June. However, Ghazouani then agreed.
