The Economic Community of West African States sent a diplomatic mission to Senegal to address the political circumstances arising from the postponement of the country's presidential election. This initiative was announced by the legislative office of the bloc on Monday, the media reported.
The ECOWAS parliament speaker, Sidie Mohamed Tunis, and assembly members will hold meetings with Senegalese authorities, lawmakers, and representatives of civil society during the mission taking place from February 12 to 14, as reportedly said in a statement.
The president of Senegal recently announced postponement of presidential election in the country, which led to violent protests in the capital, during which three people reportedly died.
However, the decision was made due to a "moral obligation" and not as a tactic to retain power, according to the government spokesman Abdou Karim Fofana.
Despite good intentions, the move sparked concern from ECOWAS and the African Union, which called on Senegal to hold transparent elections as soon as possible.
