A student was killed in the Senegalese city of Saint-Louis during Friday's protests against the delay of the presidential election, the interior ministry reportedly said on Saturday.
The ministry issued a statement acknowledging the reported death of student Alpha Yero Tounkara and expressed its intention to conduct an investigation, the Western media reported.
"The Defense and Security Forces did not intervene to maintain order on the university campus where the death occurred," it said, as cited in the report.
Last Saturday, Senegal's current President Macky Sall, who is not running for re-election, decided to indefinitely postpone the February 25 election, just hours before the official campaign was scheduled to start.
On Monday, legislators in Senegal's parliament cast their votes to prolong Sall's tenure by six months, until December 15.
The African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States expressed concerns about the postponement. Moussa Faki Mahamat, the chairman of the AU Commission, urged Senegal's authorities to hold free and fair elections as soon as possible "in a spirit of transparency, peace and national harmony."
Protests began on Monday and led to authorities detaining presidential candidates, arresting opposition lawmakers and shutting down the mobile internet, the media reported. On Friday, demonstrators took to the streets again, where police reportedly fired tear gas at them.
