Russia has requested that an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council over the US and its allies' strikes against targets in Yemen be held on Friday, the Russian mission to the UN said.
"Russia has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council for January 12 in connection with the US and UK strikes in Yemen," the mission said on Telegram.
A source in the UNSC told Sputnik that the meeting is requested for 10:00 a.m. EST (15:00 GMT).
The Russian mission, in a separate post on Telegram, announced that the UNSC meeting will begin at 3:00 pm EST time (20:00 GMT) on Friday.
The US and UK officials confirmed the airstrikes, saying these were targeting Houthi military facilities and positions in Yemen in response to attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea and not civilian population centers.

The Houthis said they were carrying out strikes against the UK and US military bases and positions and threatened that Washington and London would pay a "high price" for this massive attack.
On Thursday, the US Central Command said in a statement that the Houthis have attacked commercial ships in the Red Sea 27 times since November 19. The Houthis have previously announced their plans to prevent the passage of ships linked to Israeli companies or bound for Israel in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea until the latter's military actions in the Gaza Strip end.
