Mozambique Authorities Start Vaccinating 2.2 Million Residents Against Cholera, Reports Say

Cholera, a severe diarrheal infection, poses a significant health risk worldwide, as it is transmitted through the consumption of contaminated food or water that contains the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.

Mozambique's authorities lunched the vaccination of 2.2 million residents against cholera, media reported.
Cholera vaccinations will be given to residents of the nine most affected areas in the center and north of the country, the outlet noted. From October 1, 2023, to January 2, 2024, about 8,266 cases of cholera were reportedly recorded in the country, around 20 people died.

Cholera outbreaks have recently been reported in neighboring countries with Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Recently, Zambia's National Institute of Public Health revealed that 3,757 cholera cases and 128 deaths have been reported since October 2023.
On November 16, Zimbabwe’s authorities have declared a state of emergency in the country’s capital, Harare, due to a cholera outbreak, Zimbabwean media reported.
