Four bulk batches of pink Fluconazole 200mg tablets manufactured in Kenya and imported into Rwanda had a white discoloration and should be therefore recalled from the stores, the Rwanda Food and Drug Authority (Rwanda FDA) said in a statement.
"Rwanda FDA instructs all importers, central medical stores, wholesalers, RMS [Rwanda Medical Supply] branches, retailers, Public and Private Health Facilities to stop the distribution of the above mentioned batches of fluconazole 200mg tablets and return them to their suppliers for proper management," read the statement.
All the importers and suppliers are supposed to report to the authority within 10 days from this Thursday and also inform the Health Ministry of the quantities returned and the final stocks on hand.
The agency said that it will investigate to determine the adverse effects the drug has had on Rwandans.
Fluconazole is used for the treatment of fungal infections and their recurrences.
The drug is manufactured by Universal Corporation, a Kenyan pharmaceutical company based in the capital city of Nairobi that has been in business since 1996.
Today, the company produces more than 100 formulations, including tablets, capsules, syrups and suspensions, ointments and creams, according to its website.
