Peacekeepers of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) have left their base in the Timbuktu region in the central part of the country, the Mali state television and radio company ORF said following the ceremony of handing over the base to the authorities of the West African country.
On Thursday, the mission confirmed the closure of the base on social networks.
"We intend to complete the process of closing [the Mission's facilities] as soon as possible," the peacekeepers added.
On June 30, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted, at the request of the Malian government, a resolution on the completion of the peacekeeping mission, which, according to the African country, failed to establish security in Mali. The withdrawal of units should be completed by December 31, 2023.
