The Russian air defense destroyed and intercepted 33 Ukrainian drones over Russia's Lipetsk, Rostov and Volgograd Regions on Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
"Tonight, an attempt by the Kiev regime to carry out a terrorist attack by fixed-wing drones on objects on the territory of the Russian Federation was stopped. Air defense systems destroyed and intercepted 33 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles over the territories of the Lipetsk, Rostov and Volgograd Regions," the ministry said.
Governor of the Volgograd Region Andrey Bocharov said that there were no casualties or destruction in the region after the drone attack.
Later in the day, the defense ministry said that another two drones were downed over the Volgograd Region.
"This morning… air defense systems on duty destroyed two Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles over the territory of the Volgograd Region," the ministry stated.
Two flights from Moscow to Volgograd were delayed due to air navigation restrictions after the drone attack in the region, the Volgograd airport told Sputnik.
The Russian special military operation was launched on February 24, 2022, with the objective of "protecting people who have been subjected to genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years," as stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In early June, Ukraine launched a counteroffensive and since then has been sending drones into Russian territory almost daily. The United Nations said in August, following a botched drone strike on Moscow, that it did not want to see any targeting of civilian infrastructure.
