ECOWAS Condemns Coup Attempt in Sierra Leone, Calls for Investigation

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - On November 26, unknown persons tried to break into an arms depot in the suburbs of Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown, and attacked several major detention centers, releasing or abducting prisoners. The authorities said that the attacks were a failed coup and that they were repelled by the security forces.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the coup attempt in Sierra Leone, which took place late in November, and called on the authorities to conduct an investigation.
"On Sierra Leone, the Authority [of Heads of States] strongly condemns the attempted coup d’état on 26th November 2023, that has led to loss of life and destruction of property and urges the judicial instances to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the events, with a view to identifying and bringing the perpetrators to justice," the joint communique, signed on Sunday as a result of the 64th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, said.
The organization added that the ECOWAS supreme institution also rejects all forms of alliances that aim to split the region and promote foreign interests.
ECOWAS currently consists of 15 member-states, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, the Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, while the membership of Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Niger is suspended following the coups in these countries.
