President of Guinea-Bissau Umaro Sissoco Embalo has announced the dissolution of the parliament after clashes between security forces that took place in the capital last week.
"The date of forthcoming legislative elections will be set at the opportune moment, in line with the constitution," the president said in a communique.
On Thursday night, officers of the country's national guard tried to free an unnamed minister who was being held by police and then took refuge in barracks in the south of the city, according to media reports. This was followed by clashes between the special forces of the presidential guard and the national guard.
Last week, the Russian Embassy in Guinea-Bissau told Sputnik that the country's law enforcement forces arrested Minister of Economy and Finance Suleiman Seidi and Secretary of State for the Treasury Affairs Antonio Monteiro.
According to the country's leader, an attempt to overturn him was also made in February 2022.
The "coup attempt" in Guinea-Bissau reportedly came shortly after that of in Sierra Leone, where on November 26, a group of unidentified assailants attacked the country's weapons depot and central Pademba Road Prison.
