In November, White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby revealed that the US had gone through 96% of the money allotted for Ukraine.
"Ukraine's high burn rate for artillery has hammered home the need to invest even more in munitions. So compared to the defense budget from just five years ago, we're putting nearly 50 percent more money into munitions," Austin said in his remarks at the Ronald Reagan National Defense Forum in California.
He also pointed out that during the Biden administration's tenure, the production of artillery shells in the US will quadruple.
Since the launch of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, the US and other Western countries have been actively supplying Ukraine with weapons and ammunition. In total, the West has promised to supply 85 Leopard 2s to the regime of President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, many of the already delivered tanks have been destroyed by the Russian armed forces.
On Saturday, EU Military Committee Chairman Gen. Robert Brieger said that the EU should continue supporting Ukraine with arms and training activities.
