UN Climate Change Conference COP28 Kicks Off in UAE
The United Nations climate conference, known as COP28, is being held in the United Arab Emirates from November 30, 2023, to December 12, 2023, and is anticipated to bring together more than 70,000 participants, including heads of states, international industry leaders, academics, experts, etc.
SputnikThe 28th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP28), in compliance with the Paris Climate Agreement, is presenting the first ever Global Stocktake — an extensive assessment of advancements made toward climate goals. This will help not only align the efforts on climate action, but also understand what measures need to be taken to bridge the gaps in progress.
Moreover, on the very first day of the conference, the president of the
COP28 Sultan Al Jaber gaveled an agreement to launch a fund that will help developing countries particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. Just over an hour after the agreement's approval, more than $420 million was pledged to the fund by multiple countries.
COP28 also calls for action to accelerate the energy transition and maintain
global warming at 1.5°C. In addition, the conference discusses key elements of the energy transition, including renewable energy, energy efficiency, financing, fossil fuel supply and demand, and decarbonization.
