Niger's Military Leader Arrives in Mali on First Foreign Visit

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, the president of Niger's National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), arrived in Mali on Thursday to meet with the country's interim president, Assimi Goita, Tchiani's office said.

Tchiani left Niamey for a working visit to the Malian capital, Bamako. The Nigerien leader will also visit Burkina Faso.
In September, Goita said that the leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger had signed a charter establishing an alliance of Sahel states to "create an architecture of collective defense."

On July 26, Tchiani removed Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum from power and announced the creation of the CNSP. On August 10, Tchiani signed a decree on the formation of a new transitional government. The rebels demanded that France recall its ambassador and withdraw its troops from Niger.
