The African Development Bank said on Thursday that it has filed a formal complaint with Ethiopian authorities after two of its employees were arrested and harassed by the country's security forces without any official explanation.
The bank further noted that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reacted immediately when he learned of the "very serious diplomatic incident," ordering the immediate release of the affected staff and promising an immediate investigation into the incident.

"The government has formally acknowledged our complaint, recognized the gravity of the incident, and reassured us that all those involved in breaking the law will be thoroughly investigated and brought to justice, ensuring transparency and full accountability," the statement read.

The Ethiopian government also assured the AfDB that its staff in Ethiopia and those traveling to the country on missions "will continue to enjoy full respect of their rights, privileges and diplomatic immunities."
"The African Development Bank values its excellent relations with the government of Ethiopia and is currently engaged with the authorities, through diplomatic channels, concerning the incident," the bank concluded.
