Since the start of a new spiral of violence on October 7 in the conflict between Palestine and Israel, various countries have come up with proposals to resolve the imbroglio, now including Colombia.
"Colombia will present a resolution at the United Nations for Palestine to be accepted as fully fledged state,” Petro said via X (formerly Twitter).
The Colombian president particularly emphasized the butchery unleashed at present by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's forces at the Al Shifa hospital in Gaza among other hospitals, schools and similar civilian places.
Petro also said that Colombia would cease to buy arms from the weapon producing countries that voted against or abstained from voting on the UN General Assembly resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
“Democratic and progressive countries must fight to preserve international humanitarian law,” Petro said, adding that the worldwide expansion of barbarism must be impeded.
On November 9, Petro announced that Colombia would co-sponsor Algeria’s lawsuit at the International Criminal Court over war crimes committed by Israel in the ongoing bombardment and ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.
