WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - Republican Presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy lambasted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the early moments of the GOP debate on Wednesday, calling him a "comedian in cargo pants."

Presidential elections will be held in the United States in November 2024. At this time, candidates for the presidency participate in political debates. During one of the rallies, the Republican candidate made several non-mainstream statements regarding the situation in Ukraine and spoke about the Ukrainian president not in the most flattering terms.
"[He is] a comedian in cargo pants," said Ramaswamy, referring to Zelensky.
The presidential candidate added that he was "absolutely unpersuaded" by Zelensky's recent pleas for more financial assistance when asked by moderators if he supported additional funding as requested by President Joe Biden.

"Ukraine is not a paragon of democracy," he said. "This is a country that has banned 11 opposition parties. It has consolidated all media into one state TV media arm. That's not democratic. It has threatened not to hold elections this year unless the US forks over more money."

Ramaswamy has been very vocal about his unwillingness to provide more aid for Ukraine if elected president; at the first Republican debate in August, he was the only candidate who said he would not support providing additional funding for Ukraine.
