Scholz is currently touring Africa. He visited Nigeria on Sunday and is now in the Ghanian capital of Accra.
"There is still no permanent member of the UN Security Council from the African continent. During my talks with [Akufo-Addo] in Ghana, we agreed that reform is overdue - Germany supports this process and Africa's position," Scholz wrote on X.
In September, top and senior diplomats of the G4 countries, namely Brazil, Japan, India and Germany, met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York and called for a "comprehensive" reform of the UN Security Council and expansion of its membership.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking at the UN General Assembly, called for changing the method of forming the UN Secretariat. He added that the reforms of the existing global governance architecture were overdue as it did not meet the up-to-date requirements. The expansion of the UN Security Council's membership through eliminating the under-representation of the global majority countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America is increasingly in demand, Lavrov said.
