Over 100 people died from cholera and dengue fever in Sudan in the period from July 1 to October 23, the country's health ministry said.
According to the ministry, dengue fever left at least 49 people dead, the total number of registered cases reached 3,316 in a four-month period. Meanwhile, at least 73 individuals died from cholera out of 1,059 reported cases.
Most of the cholera and dengue cases were reported in Gedaref state, the report said. The ministry added that about 70% of hospitals in the African state are out of service.
Armed clashes between the Sudanese forces and RSF broke out in April, with the epicenter in the country's capital, Khartoum. This prompted thousands of the city's residents to flee to calmer areas of the country's Gedaref and Al-Jazira states, overwhelming the supply of clean water, according to media reports.
Since April, a series of temporary nationwide ceasefires were declared, however, to no avail. As for the most recent attempt to resolve the conflict, the belligerents resumed talks in Saudi Arabia on October 26.
Moreover, the conflict led to the displacement of millions of people. The UN's International Organization for Migration said in August that there are over 5 million registered refugees and asylum seekers in the region and about 13.5 million people internally displaced as of July 2023.
In early August, the Red Cross said that months of clashes could lead to disease outbreaks and a deadly collapse of the healthcare system.
