The two countries have agreed to expand their defense ties and explore potential collaboration in the manufacturing of small weapons, ammunition, and other military equipment in the Southern African nation, India's Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
The move was discussed during a meeting between India's Defense Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane and Permanent Secretary of Zambia's Ministry of Defense Norman Chipakupaku in New Delhi on October 20.
According to the statement, during the meeting, the two sides emphasized the long-standing relationship between India and Zambia and expressed their desire to further enhance bilateral defense ties. It was noted that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Defense Cooperation signed in 2019 provides a comprehensive framework for collaboration in various areas of defense.
India's Secretary of Defense guaranteed Zambia of comprehensive support, which involves military training and strengthening the capacity of the country's defense forces. This assistance will be extended through an array of military courses and the deployment of Indian training teams.
"The Defense Secretary assured the Zambian side of cooperation in military training and capacity building of the country’s defense forces through various military courses and deputation of Indian training teams," read the statement.
Moreover, Aramane highlighted the achievements of the Indian defense industry under the 'Make in India' campaign, which covers a wide range of activities. The program has strengthened India's domestic defense production and solidified its reputation as a reliable supplier of high-quality defense equipment.
Chipakupaku, for his part, expressed his appreciation for the progress made by the Indian defense industry, adding that his country is looking forward to India's support in providing modern, cost-effective equipment to enhance the capabilities of the Zambian defense forces.
"The Zambian Permanent Secretary extended his appreciation towards the advancement of Indian defense industries and looked forward to their support through high-quality and cost-effective equipment for the modernization of Zambian defense forces," the ministry said.
As part of their visit, the Zambian delegation visited multiple manufacturing sites. This experience provided them with an opportunity to directly witness the advancements made by the Indian defense industries, and explore the potential for collaboration between the two nations. Norman Chipakupaku and other senior Zambian army officers also met with Lt. Gen. Tarun Kumar Aich, the Deputy Chief of Army Staff, to discuss potential areas of cooperation.
