Hamas Says Started Shelling Tel Aviv Against Backdrop of Cairo Summit for Peace

TUNIS (Sputnik) - The military wing of Hamas said on Saturday it started shelling Tel Aviv after representatives of the international community had gathered at a summit in Cairo to discuss the settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Tel Aviv is being shelled in response to the "massacre" of civilians allegedly committed by Israeli forces, the armed wing of Hamas said in a statement.
Later in the day, the Israel Defense Force (IDF) confirmed it had spotted several firings in the north of the country.
"A short while ago, a number of launches were identified toward the area of Har Dov. IDF soldiers are responding with live fire toward the source of the fire," the IDF said on Telegram.
The Cairo Summit for Peace is taking place in the Egyptian capital on Saturday with the participation of over 30 states and a number of international organizations.

On October 7, Hamas launched a surprise large-scale rocket attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip and breached the border, killing and abducting people in neighboring Israeli communities. Israel launched retaliatory strikes and ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, home to more than 2 million people, cutting off supplies of water, food and fuel. Thousands of dead and injured have been reported on both sides as a result of the escalation.
