US Congressman Jim Jordan won the House of Representatives Republicans’ nomination as speaker in a secret-ballot vote, Republican conference chair Elise Stefanik said on Friday.
"Congratulations Speaker-designate [Jim Jordan]," Stefanik said in a statement via the social media platform X.
Jordan beat Congressman Austin Scott in a vote of 124-81, according to media reports.
On October 3, a majority of the House of Representatives voted to remove Republican Kevin McCarthy of California as Speaker. It was the first time in US history that the Speaker of the House of Representatives was removed from office.
The vote to oust McCarthy was initiated by fellow Republican Matt Gaetz, who said that "[...] no one trusts him [McCarthy]." The reason was ideological differences between the politicians: the Republicans did not forgive the speaker for compromising with the Democrats on the budget.
In the current situation, congressmen are not authorized to vote on significant issues, such as the budget for fiscal year 2024, which began on October 1, and the allocation of major new military aid to Ukraine and Israel.
