Earlier in the day, AFP reported, citing the chief of staff of the French armed forces, that Paris would start an operation to withdraw its military this week.
"The National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland informs Nigeriens that the withdrawal of French military troops from our country will begin this week," the CNSP wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The 400 French soldiers based in the town of Ouallam will be first to leave the country, the council said.
"The Niamey air base, where the majority of French troops are stationed, will then be dismantled by the end of the year," the statement said.
The Nigerien military will be "particularly attentive" to ensure that the withdrawal takes place in an orderly and safe manner, the CNSP added.
