The Ukrainian armed forces shelled the town of Klimovo in Russia's Bryansk region overnight using cluster munitions, but there were no casualties, Governor Alexander Bogomaz said Tuesday, citing preliminary information.
"The armed forces of Ukraine shelled the town of Klimovo with cluster munitions. According to preliminary information, there were no casualties," Bogomaz said on Telegram.
The governor added that several residential buildings and outbuildings were damaged in the shelling.
In July, the Biden administration sent its first military aid package to Ukraine that included cluster munitions, a move widely criticized by human rights activists and opposed by some US lawmakers.
Cluster munitions are a kind of air-dropped munitions that includ smaller sub-munitions. They are particularly dangerous for civilians, as the sub-munitions are often preserved in the soil for a long time.
As Russian President Vladimir Putin noted, Moscow has so far not needed to use cluster munitions, but if this type of weaponry is used against its forces, Russia has the right to take mirror actions.
