South African water supply company of the country's city, Johannesburg Water said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that it is appealing to customers to urgently reduce water usage as Rand Water’s Eikenhof System is under severe strain.
"This comes as water consumption continues to increase, which is affecting supply," the statement added.
Later in the day, the company published a warning stating that the system faces "risk of collapse" due to Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station being under strain.
On Sunday, the Johannesburg Water and Rand Water companies published a joint statement urging consumers to conserve water and giving them some tips such as taking a two-minute shower instead of using bathtubs, refraining from leaving the tap running when brushing teeth, avoiding watering lawns and gardens, cleaning driveways and paved areas with clean drinking water, and washing cars only on weekends.
The measures are needed to reduce the high level of water consumption that poses a threat to the stability of the water supply, the statement read.
