Black Sheep: Kenyan Man Returns Home After Half Century Being Presumed Dead by Family

A 81-year Kenyan man, Joseph Ondongo after five decades returned to his home village in the country's south-western Homa Bay County, which he left at the age of 30 due to family dispute, the local media reported.
In particular, Ondongo had a disagreement with one of his brothers, who is now deceased. Moreover, he reportedly revealed that during the family quarrel some family members died, and the blame fell on his brother.
Relatives of the man considered him dead after years of absence. However, his sister-in-law Matasia Akelo, aged 90 found it hard to believe.

"I had difficulties believing he was dead. We didn't see a body so it was hard to believe that he was dead," the woman was quoted by the media as saying.

According to Ondongo, most of the time of his absence he reportedly was in the Kenyan city of Likoni in Mombasa County, where he worked as a caretaker at a white man's house, supposedly American.

"I took up the job without thinking twice," the man said, adding: "I worked there as a caretaker. I felt more comfortable being in Mombasa than being at home in Homa Bay."

He added that the life in that city was pretty easy, which helped him to forget all the troubles at home, the media noted.
Speaking about possible marriage, Odongo noted that he decided not to remarry after his wife had left him before having children due to the outbreak of HIV at the time.

"The idea of having a wife came during the outbreak of HIV in 1981. I decided to stay single just to be safe," the man was cited by the media as saying.

The idea of returning to his homeland came to Ondongo after unsuccessful attempts to connect with his employer, who had supposedly left for Europe, according to the outlet.
On his arrival, the man reportedly met with the area chief, who turned to the help of some senior residents, who recognized Ondongo.
Last week, the family held a celebration on the occasion of Ondongo's unexpected return, the media said.
