A drone attack on an open market south of the Sudanese capital Khartoum on Sunday killed at least 40 people amid the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), local media reported.
In addition to the 40 dead, dozens of others were wounded in the attack in Khartoum's Mayo district, the media said, citing local activist groups and two health workers from Bashair University Hospital, where the wounded were being treated.
The activists posted footage on social networks showing bodies wrapped in white sheets in an open courtyard of the hospital.
Since April, Sudan has been plagued by clashes between the regular army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that have left thousands of civilians dead and wounded. Millions of people have fled the Sudanese capital, which has been the epicenter of the ongoing armed conflict.
Fighting later spread to the western region of Darfur, where thousands were also forced to flee the conflict. Several ceasefire agreements between the two warring parties have failed to end the violence in the country.
In total, the UN estimates that more than 4.8 million people have been displaced by the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
