Meta* (the parent company of Facebook) decided to resort to an out-of-court settlement with the company's content moderators who had filed a lawsuit claiming wrongful dismissal of their employees by Sama, a US company that used to coordinate content moderation with Meta, media state.
The Kenya Employment and Labour Relations Court gave the sides a period of 21 days to engage in mediation and find a resolution outside of court.
The court stated that the 21-day timeframe offered allows Meta and the content editors to reach an amicable arrangement, avoiding going to trial.
Around 260 employees at Facebook's moderation centre in Kenya's Nairobi were laid off early this year when the internet giant Facebook shifted its moderation supplier from the US business Sama, with which it has been working since 2019, to the European firm Majorel.
Sama attributed its decision to discontinue moderation services and separate ways with Meta to a difficult economic situation and changing business requirements.
The fired personnel claimed that the layoff decision was illegal, since no legitimate or reasonable explanations for the dismissals were presented.
