French, Chinese Foreign Ministers Discuss Situations in Different Conflict Zones, Including Niger

PARIS (Sputnik) - French Foreign Minister Colonna and her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, discussed the Ukraine conflict, the situation in Niger and Nagorno-Karabakh, disputed territory on the border of Armenia and Azerbaijan, during a phone call on Friday, the French Foreign Ministry said.

The French Foreign Ministry said that during a telephone conversation, the French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna and her Chinese colleague, Wang Yi, welcomed the resumption of bilateral contacts as well the ministers discussed the situation in Ukraine, Niger and Nagorno-Karabakh, disputed territory on the border of Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Colonna noted during the call that Beijing "can play an important role" in ending the Ukraine conflict, as well as combating its consequences, in particular, for food security, the ministry's statement read.

The French minister also reminded Yi that Paris had condemned the recent coup in Niger and the detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family, as well as had supported the efforts of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to restore constitutional order in the country, the French Foreign Ministry said.
The two top diplomats agreed to continue the bilateral dialogue on a number of issues, the statement added.
In late July, a round of financial and economic dialogue between the two countries was held in China in the presence of French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, the French Foreign Ministry recalled.
Another round of high-level dialogue on humanitarian issues will take place at the end of 2023, the ministry said, adding that the agenda of the meeting would include preparations for the Franco-Chinese year of tourism and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries.
