Rwandan Foreign Minister Vincent Biruta has arrived in Addis Ababa for a working visit, the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry said. Birtukan Ayano, the Ethiopian foreign minister and ambassador, greeted her counterpart at Bole International Airport.
According to the ministry's press release, Biruta will meet with senior Ethiopian government officials to enhance "longstanding, multifaceted Ethio-Rwandan cooperation in bilateral, regional, and multilateral venues."
Last October, Ethiopa's Deputy Prime Minister and then-Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen met with Biruta in Addis Ababa, where they discussed the possibilities for a closer partnership between the two countries.
In 2012, ties between the two nations were significantly reinforced. Rwanda and Ethiopia signed bilateral agreements on general cooperation, a joint declaration on strategic partnership and the establishment of a joint permanent/ministerial commission (JPC/JMC).
In 2020, the two countries signed an agreement to open their airspace, allowing their national carriers to operate without restrictions.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed undertook a two-day working visit to Rwanda in 2021, where he discussed regional matters relating to security in the region with Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
