Ethiopia Arrests Over 3,000 People Suspected of Involvement in Terrorist Groups, Illegal Activities

Over 9,000 pieces of intelligence info were stored and used to tackle security issues involving terrorist groups who were targeting Ethiopia, the National Intelligence and Security Services revealed.

More than 3,000 individuals were arrested as suspects involved in "terrorist groups, money laundering, corruption, and other illegal activities," the Ethiopian National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) announced.
Ethiopia's NISS noted that over 9,000 pieces of intelligence data had been analyzed during the last budget year, with the said information being used for solving security-related issues.

In addition, the East African country managed to thwart several terrorist plots targeting its citizens, and arrested 165 al-Shabaab* and 121 Daesh* terrorists with the help of the international community, the statement revealed.
According to the intelligence agency, armed syndicates carried out criminal activity seeking to create political, social and economic strife.

"Some forces, organized to carry out lootings, have currently been trying to create social, economic and political pressures on the public by destroying governmental structures, disrupting the activities of financial institutions, blocking road infrastructures that connect the region with federal government," the NISS said as cited by state media.
