Nigerien Capital's Streets Flooded With Protesters After President's Ouster

On July 26, Niger's military announced on national TV that President Mohamed Bazoum had been overthrown, the borders had been shut, and a curfew had been imposed. The Presidential Guard had earlier blockaded the presidential palace in Niamey, the African nation's capital.

Following the events, Acting UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Niger, Nicole Kouassi, stated that Mohamed Bazoum remains in his home, and all UN staff in Niger are accounted for.
Later, the UN Security Council condemned attempts to change the African nation's government, and called for Bazoum's immediate release.
Apart from that, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) closed borders with the nation, slapped financial sanctions on its military leaders, and demanded the "immediate release and reinstatement" of the president and threatened the use of force.
