At the state level, the holiday started to be celebrated in the Russian Empire in 1888, in the year of the 900th anniversary of the baptism of Russia and in memory of Prince Vladimir.

Orthodox Christianity remains the most widespread denomination in the country: 57% of Russians identify themselves as followers of this religion, according to the polls.
