The actions of the mutineers to blockade the residence of Niger President Mohamed Bazoum are "anti-state," the presidential office has said, assuring that the head of state and his family were unharmed.
"The President of the Republic and his family feel well," the statement said.
The office added that the attempted mutiny was made by the Presidential Guard.
However, the presidency clarified that Niger's military did not support these "anti-state actions" and is prepared to attack the guard involved in the mutiny.
Bazoum was elected president of the country in February 2021 and assumed office in April 2021.
The incumbent won the second round of the presidential election with 55.67% of the vote against former President Mahamane Ousmane.
Prior to that, he served as minister of the interior from 2016 to 2020.
Niger is not participating in the second Russia-Africa Summit scheduled this week in St. Petersburg, Russia, but this is not connected with an attempted mutiny, the source told Sputnik.
