On Monday, Johannesburg residents witnessed the first snowfall in more than a decade.
According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), snow fell in the south of Gauteng, in areas such as Soweto, Alberton and Roodepoort with temperatures dropping to at least -6°C.
Bewildered residents took to social media to capture the rare occasion.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency said snowfall across the city had caused congestion on the city's roads, also affecting visibility.
The warning was paired with a caution from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police about slippery roads.
According to SAWS forecasts, the cold conditions are expected to last for a week, until next Tuesday.
Gauteng residents may recall the events of 11 years ago when Johannesburg recorded a temperature of -2°C and cars and sidewalks in the city center were shrouded in a white blanket of snow.
According to local media, SAWS records revealed that Johannesburg had seen only 22 days of snow in the last 103 years.
