Somali Troops Occupy Territories Left by African Union Forces

The African Union (AU) has supported Somalia's government in its struggle against the Islamist insurgent organization al-Shabaab* since 2007 by carrying out regional peacekeeping efforts known as the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). The latter was replaced by the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in 2022.

Somalia Shapes Security Apparatus on Eve of AU Mission's Departure
The announcement followed the departure of 2,000 AU troops on June 30.
The mission's Burundian contingent managed the majority of the military posts that have been turned over so far, which are situated in the Lower Shabelle region.
A further 3,000 AU soldiers are anticipated to depart by the end of September, and the entire force is scheduled to leave Somalia by the end of 2024.
AMISOM's duties include assisting in the establishment of safe conditions for the distribution of humanitarian relief, assisting in the implementation of a national security strategy, training the Somali security forces, and supporting interim political structures.
The mission has been assisting troops of the Federal Government of Somalia in their conflict with al-Shabaab insurgents as part of its duty.
The African Union Peace and Security Council had been given permission by UN Security Council Resolution 2628 to reorganize AMISOM and replace it with the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) from April 1, 2022. The current mission is focused on establishing the autonomy of the Somalian government as the pullout of the AU forces approaches.
