“We must never take for granted the democracy we enjoy today,” according to Bongani Baloyi, president of the Xiluva party in South Africa.
“People died for it, and as a consequence, we have got a responsibility and an obligation to keep and entrench and deepen this democracy”, he explains.
Baloyi believes that it is critical for the youth to recognize the unique cultures of Africa and embrace them.
“I think there has to be a sense of awakening in us as Africans and realize that for us to transact with the world, we must create and harness our unique identity, which is informed and represented and manifested in our languages as well,” Baloyi continues.
He encourages today's youth to learn from the past and start taking personal responsibility for change.
“We must not only think of the best of us in the past, but the best for us must be the future. So let's draw from these lessons,” Baloyi says.
