BRICS Calls For Implementation of Russia's Part of Grain Deal, Food Memorandum

CAPE TOWN (Sputnik) - On Thursday, South Africa hosted a meeting of the five BRICS member states' foreign ministers in Cape Town. The top diplomats discussed topical issues on the international agenda and cooperation on leading multilateral platforms, as well as exchanged opinions on perspectives for the group's expansion.

BRICS calls for the full implementation of the grain deal and the memorandum on supply of Russian food products, according to a joint statement published on Thursday.
"They called for the full and effective implementation of both the Black Sea Grain Initiative and the Memorandum of Understanding between the Russian Federation and the Secretariat of the United Nations on promoting Russian food products and fertilizers to the world markets and stress the importance of allowing grains and fertilisers to continue to reach those most in need," the statement said.

On Sudan

BRICS foreign ministers have also expressed their concern regarding the recent violence outbreak in Sudan and called for the immediate cessation of hostilities.
"The Ministers expressed concern about the outbreak of violence in Sudan. They urged the immediate cessation of hostilities and they called for the unimpeded access of the Sudanese population to humanitarian assistance," the joint statement said.
The ministers welcomed all international efforts of seeking a solution to the current situation in the country, as well as the evacuation of foreign citizens from Sudan.

On critical infrastructure

BRICS FMs have also condemned all terrorist attacks against critical infrastructure, including energy facilities.

"They strongly condemned all terrorist attacks against critical infrastructure, including critical energy facilities, and against other vulnerable targets," the statement read.

The ministers underscored the necessity to ensure energy security.
"The Ministers emphasised that ensuring energy security is a crucial foundation for economic development, social stability, national security, and the welfare of all nations worldwide," the statement said.

On Ukraine

Moreover, BRICS foreign ministers have expressed their appreciation for the international mediation efforts aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
"The Ministers recalled their national positions concerning the situation in and around Ukraine... They noted with appreciation relevant proposals of mediation and good offices aimed at peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy," the joint statement read.

Arms control

Apart from that, BRICS foreign ministers have called on the international community to strengthen the arms control system.
"The Ministers called for strengthening the system of arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation, including the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction (BTWC) and the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on Their Destruction (CWC), and for preserving their integrity and effectiveness to maintain global stability and international peace and security," the joint statement said.
The ministers also support the negotiations on a multilateral agreement on the prevention of an arms race in space.
"The Ministers reasserted their support for ensuring the long-term sustainability of outer space activities and prevention of an arms race in outer space (PAROS) and of its weaponization, including through negotiations to adopt a relevant legally binding multilateral instrument," the statement read.
