This week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov embarked on his fourth trip to the African continent, visiting such countries as Kenya, Burundi and Mozambique. On Thursday, the chief of Moscow's diplomacy arrived in South Africa to participate in the meeting of the BRICS foreign ministers on June 1-2.

Russia's top diplomat is taking part in the plenary session of the BRICS ministerial meeting in Cape Town, South Africa.

The current global and regional situation is the main topic on the agenda of the meeting, as well as cooperation between the BRICS countries. The participants are also expected to discuss the issue of the group's expansion and the prospects for its strategic cooperation.

On the sidelines of the BRICS ministerial meeting, the minister held separate talks with his counterparts from India, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa.

The event on Thursday will be followed by an extended meeting of the so-called Friends of BRICS on Friday, to which the foreign ministers of 15 African and Global South countries are invited.
