Algeria is number one in Africa and five in the world with a harvest of 2.2 million tons of watermelon, according to the United Nations-affiliated Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Turkiye comes in second place with 3.87 million tons. India and Brazil occupy the third and fourth places in the ranking with 2.49 and 2.27 million tons respectively.
The top eight global producers also include Iran, Russia, and the United States.
First in Arab World and Africa
Algeria, although fifth in the world, comes at the top of the ranking of producers in the Arab world and Africa.
According to local media, in 2021 the country produced 2.095 million tons and the production per person was 49.259 kilograms. The figure is not exact, however, because the harvest taken as a whole was not intended only for the domestic market, reports specify.
