Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Somali counterpart Abshir Omar Jama held a press conference in Moscow after meeting to discuss a wide range of regional and global issues.
In January 2018, Russia's then-Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich met with Somalia's then Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire at the Davos Economic Forum. Later that year, Lavrov called for a strengthening of international support for Somalia and the AU mission in the country, which has been struggling against a radical islamist insurgency since the mid-2000s.
Somalia's then-President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed represented his country at the 2019 Russia–Africa Summit.
