Fresh Round of Unrest: Clashes Between Opposition, Police in Kenya

On Tuesday, opposition members of parliament in Kenya were met with tear gas from riot police during recent demonstrations of the opposition, which criticizes the government's handling of a cost-of-living crisis and does not accept the results of last year's election.

Members of Raila Odinga's Azimio la Umoja (One Kenya) coalition have been waging demonstrations since March, proclaiming that they are protesting against the high cost of food, fuel, and electricity in the country, as well against the results of last year's elections, which led to William Ruto becoming the president – and which the opposition deems "fraudulent."
After the protests in March resulted in the death of a student, Odinga's side announced a halt to the demonstrations in order to start bipartisan talks, but now the process appears to have stalled.
The recent protests took place despite the police's ban on public demonstrations following deadly clashes in March.
Incidents including vehicle burnings and road blockages were reported in the Kenyan capital city of Nairobi during Tuesday's protests near President William Ruto's office downtown.
Sputnik has collected photos depicting some of the incidents that took place during the opposition demonstrations.
