Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is chairing a high-level open debate at the UN Security Council on "Effective multilateralism through the Defence of the Principles of the UN Charter," one of the landmark events of the Russian presidency in the body.
The discussion is expected to focus on building a new multipolar world order based on sovereign equality and the UN role in facilitating a smooth transition to a just world order.
Earlier, addressing the 77th session of the UN General Assembly on September 24, 2022, the Russian foreign minister emphasized that the unipolar model of world development which served the interests of the West – that has for centuries amassed the world's wealth at the expense of Asia, Africa and Latin America – is rapidly becoming the thing of the past.
