At Least Ten Dead, Dozens Injured After Triple Terror Attack Hits Central Mali

A triple suicide bomb attack destroyed 20 buildings in the city of Sevare in central Mali early Saturday morning, leaving at least ten people dead and more than 60 injured, according to a government statement.

"The Transitional Government informs the public that for the past few days, there has been a resurgence of perfidious terrorist incidents, the most recent of which was the attempted complex attack on the Sevaré airport area with kamikaze vehicles, today, April 22, 2023, at 5:30 am," Lieutenant Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga, Mali's government spokesman said in a statement.

Maïga also specified that only civilians were among the dead and all the attackers had been eliminated by the Malian Armed Forces.

"Thanks to the legendary determination of our valiant armed forces, acting exclusively with their own forces, 28 attackers were neutralized," Maïga said. "On the same day, the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) destroyed a terrorist sanctuary in Mourdiah [village in south-western Mali] and then neutralized about 60 terrorists in Boni [village in southern-central Mali], when they were coordinating attacks against the population and the FAMa."

So far, no organization has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack in Mali.

Days before the attack, a senior Malian official and three other people were killed in an ambush in an area of the country’s southwest. On Friday, the al-Qaeda*-linked group known as JNIM reportedly claimed responsibility for that attack.

In another incident in Mali’s capital, Bamako, a military helicopter crashed in a residential neighborhood while returning from a mission on Saturday.
