Coup in Benin: What We Know So Far

🟠Gunfire was reported on Sunday in Cotonou at Camp Guézo, near President Patrice Talon’s residence.

🟠Early in the morning, a group of soldiers announced on public television that they had “removed Mr. Talon from office.”

🟠The soldiers called themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR), led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, who presented himself as the new leader.

🟠“Today, we, the defense and security forces, after thorough reflection aimed at providing direction for our country, have decided to assume our responsibilities in the face of the multiple excesses of Patrice Talon’s government,” according to their public statement.

🟠“The seizure of power at this moment reflects the firm determination of the CMR to fully involve all social strata of our country, without any distinction whatsoever. As part of the transition and the restoration of national cohesion, the national army shall exercise, until further notice, the full powers vested in the State of Benin,” the soldiers announced.

🟠The National Guard is responding to mutineers entrenched in the national television building, according to multiple Sputnik Africa sources.
