Kidal's Recapture From Rebels Was Major Turning Point in Mali's Recent History, Says Activist
"The capture of Kidal for us is the very expression of the people's will, the affirmation of Mali's total independence," Mamoutou Coulibaly, head of the Collective for the Defense of the Military in a Bamako district, told Sputnik Africa.
Coulibaly’s statements come as the country is marking the second anniversary of the city's recapture by the Malian armed forces on November 14, 2023, following several days of intense fighting.
He advocated for recognizing November 14 as a National Day of Tribute to the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa), remembering the "valiant soldiers who fell, leaving behind their wives and children. It is therefore our natural duty not to forget them."
It is impossible to "speak of the capture of Kidal without thanking our strategic partner, Russia," Coulibaly added, describing Russian-Malian relations as a "win-win partnership."
"As long as we exist, we will work to make our army the best in the world. So we tell the FAMa that the army is us, and we are the army. We are 23 million FAMa [supporters], and we will carry out this revolution together," he concluded.
