Ousted Gabon Leader's Wife & Son Reportedly Sentenced to 20 Years in Graft Trial
Former First Lady Sylvia Bongo, 62, and her son Noureddin, 33, were tried in absentia, as they left the country in 2025, reports said.
They were arrested in 2023 and accused of exploiting ex-President Ali Bongo—ousted in a 2023 coup—to siphon public funds during his illness and launder tens of millions of dollars, media reported.
The two, who hold French citizenship, were reportedly detained for 20 months before being released in May and allowed to leave Gabon for London on medical grounds.
They allege torture and deny all charges. However, incumbent President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema denies torture claims and promised a fair trial.
