Namibia Rolls Out Urgent Plan to Secure Water Supply Amid Prolonged Drought
The response strategy includes both immediate and long-term measures to ensure NAMWATER—Namibia’s state-owned service responsible for supplying bulk water nationwide—maintains its water pumping capacity, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Land Reform said in a statement.
The national energy utility—NAMPOWER—will provide electricity assistance to households and businesses, the ministry added.
“Each region must have sufficient water supply for human consumption, livestock, and gardening projects for food security,” Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare stressed.
Key solutions, according to the statement, include:
🟠expanding water pipeline networks;
🟠enhancing rainwater collection through dam construction and repair;
🟠drilling new boreholes, upgrading existing ones;
🟠mobilizing communities, fostering food security;
🟠implementing measures to prevent and manage veld fires;
🟠accelerating the sealing of the Etaka Canal.
